We all know how critically important family is to our students' success. We also know about the hardships we face when trying to communicate and engage with families of our ESL students. There are many reasons for this - language levels, fear of the unknown, family trauma to name a few- and we need to find ways to overcome these hurdles. On this page, ideas for family involvement in our school community can be shared and commented on.
I have included some online documents to peruse. These should get you started. If you have more information, or ideas to share, please post in a comment below. Otherwise, if you'd like to pursue a more detailed discussion, please click on "Discussion Board" in the menu bar above to be brought to our common discussion board to explore this topic more in depth.
Some online documents to help include:
Holding an effective ESL Parent Meeting
How ESL Parents can Help their Children Learn English
Including ESL/ELL Parents in your Classroom
These include some great ideas, including holding parent meetings to orient to school life, how to help with homework at home, and holding 'math nights' for families of ESL students. Enjoy!
This is a space designed to share experiences, research and ideas around teaching English as an Additional Language. In particular it is for EAL teachers to problem solve and share successes together. Or, it is the musings of one such teacher when she's got no one to talk to.

About Me
- Lana
- I am an English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher in Saskatoon, SK. I have taught in various cultures overseas and to many age groups and settings. I am now living the dream teaching English to amazing students who have immigrated to Saskatchewan. I want to learn everything I can, and maybe eventually visit everywhere they've been...if only through their stories.
